Washington, D.C. — Today, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry passed the Farm Bill, the Agricultural Act of 2026, advancing it to the Senate floor. Thanks in large part to the tireless bipartisan advocacy from members of the Defeat EATS Coalition, the Save Our Bacon Act (SOBA) remains excluded from the Farm Bill text. 

SOBA faces strong bipartisan opposition from agricultural, animal welfare, environmental, and public health groups, as well as countless farmers, volunteers, and Americans nationwide. 

SOBA would threaten hundreds of public health and disease prevention laws, undermine independent producers, and condemn animals to cruel, unnecessary suffering. Keeping this language out of the Farm Bill protects critical markets, respects voters’ concerns, and preserves commonsense standards that support farmers, communities, and animal welfare.

Following the Committee’s passage of the Farm Bill, the Defeat EATS Coalition issued the following statement: 

“The Senate Agriculture Committee has demonstrated that the Save Our Bacon Act has no place in any version of the Farm Bill. The Save Our Bacon Act would be deeply harmful to American agriculture, and it is clearer than ever before that opposition to this poison pill language is widespread and growing, with significant concerns being raised by lawmakers and stakeholders across the political spectrum. 

Passage of the Save Our Bacon Act would further tilt the scales towards industrial agriculture, eliminate important markets for independent farmers, limit consumer access to products they demand, and override hundreds of animal protection and public health and safety laws. The Defeat EATS Coalition urges Congressional leaders to ensure it remains excluded in any final Farm Bill.”
